What are Google Play Games?

Mobile gaming has grown rapidly over the past two decades, and one of the driving factors has been the establishment and easy access of app stores. There are a couple of different stores that have established themselves as the industry standard over others, including the Google Play Store.

The Google Play Store competes with Apple’s App Store, offering a huge library of Android apps and games to users around the world, and soon Windows users too.

Google is preparing for big things with its Google Play Games ecosystem. But what is it exactly?

What are Google Play Games?

Google Play Games is a cloud gaming ecosystem that tracks achievements and scores, and allows players to switch players between different platforms.

“From 2022, gamers will be able to experience their favorite games on Google Play on more devices: switch seamlessly between phone, tablet, Chromebook and soon also Windows PCs,” said Google Product Director Greg Hartrell in a Statement about The Verge.

You will soon be able to play your favorite Android games from the Google Play Store on your Windows PC without emulation. There were many ways to do this, but all of them required emulation to get the same result. With Google Play Games, this can be done natively, which will hopefully lead to an increase in performance.

Google’s brief nod at The Game Awards 2021 didn’t give an exact date for Windows support, but we can expect more news to pop up in the New Year.
