VALORANT professionals use anime gifs to spice up before a game

Before almost every VALORANT match he plays professionally, Tyson “TenZ” Ngo Contributions a gif of an anime character booting up on Twitter, usually by Killua Zoldyck from the popular Hunter x Hunter series. Other players have followed suit, posting gifs of anime characters and even changing their Twitter profile picture to their favorite characters.

According to Nikita “d3ffo” Sudakov from Gambit Esports international, the trend has prevailed at the Masters Berlin.

“I posted a gif on Twitter before every game and it still works for me,” he said.

But some players, like TenZ, set the trend before international events started in VALORANT.

D3ffo’s Twitter profile photo is an avid anime fanatic and the main character in one of his favorite shows, Seven Deadly Sins. He said the training was a joke, but he has won almost every match since using the avatar. Before his last win against Team Vikings at VALORANT Champions, he has sent a gif of “Tokyo Ghoul”.

Other VALORANT players joining the anime gif trend include Erick from Cloud9.Xeppaa“Bach and KRÜ Esports’ Roberto Francisco”teeth”Rivas Bugueño. While none of the players won the games they were playing after tweeting the short videos – Cloud9 fell to Fnatic 1-2 and KRÜ lost to Team Liquid 0-2 – Mazino said he likes the trend and finds that he likes it helps before the games.

“In my experience, guys who have an anime profile picture just did more and are better at tournaments, and that’s where it came from,” said Mazino. “Post an anime gif to intimidate your opponent.”

Much like other rituals some players have before a game, like changing the mouse grip or breathing exercises, this trend is a great way for players to set the tone for their upcoming game. Whether it’s an arc of revenge against a previous opponent or a general power-up before taking on a tournament favorite, there is almost no wrong way for players to get involved.

“The trending ones are good to go with,” Mazino said of choosing the right anime gif before a game. “The classics, you can never fail because of the classics.”
