Live streaming continued to grow on almost all platforms in 2021, with both Twitch and Facebook Gaming seeing growth of around 45 percent year over year compared to 2020.
For Twitch, that growth resulted in the platform growing from 17 billion hours in 2020 to 24 billion hours in 2021. Facebook Gaming even saw slightly stronger growth, growing at 47 percent for the year after it grew from 3.6 billion had watched on 5.3 billion hours, according to Rainmaker, Analysis partner of StreamElements.
Just Chatting was by far the most popular category on Twitch in 2021, bringing in a total of 3.1 billion hours. That’s more than 1 billion hours more than the runner-up, Grand Theft Auto V.and 1.3 billion hours more than League of Legends in third place. Fourteen days was the only other title to break the 1 billion hour mark with VALORANT round off the top 5 with around 949 million hours.
Taken individually, xQc remained at the top of the Twitch ecosystem for the second year in a row, with more than 261 million hours in 2021. That total is up from 143.6 million hours in 2020 as the King retains his crown.
The rest of the top 10 streamers in terms of hours watched in 2021 has changed quite a bit from 2020, with only six names left from the previous year. Gaules dropped from second to third, with Loud_coringa finishing second behind xQc while Shroud returned to the list and both MontanaBlack88 and HasanAbi came up the ranks.
In addition to Twitch and Facebook Gaming, YouTube Gaming noted The platform had 800 billion game-related views, over 90 million hours of live streaming and over 250 million uploads in the first half of 2021, although the numbers have not yet been released at the end of the year.
