These were the most widely played and purchased games on Steam in 2021

Some surprises from the statistics recently released.

With the New Year approaching, Valve has released its annual list of the top games for 2021. The list is broken down into several “best of” categories to show which games people have played the most and which have raked the most benefit. Players can also see which new releases of the year did the best and which early release titles sold the best.

Each of the categories includes a brief explanation of what the category means and how exactly the list was created. For example, the “best-selling VR games” offer the “100 best-selling pure VR experiences of 2021” based on sales according to Valves blog entry. However, the games listed under each category are not in any particular order, making it difficult to tell which title was the top selling or overall most played title. Instead, the games are divided into four tiers: platinum, gold, silver, and bronze. Platinum ranks in the top 12, gold ranks 13th to 24th, silver ranks 25th to 40th and bronze ranks 41st to 100th.

One of the most interesting categories is the “most played” titles on Steam. This category is divided according to the number of simultaneous players from January 1st to December 15th of this year, with the platinum level having reached over 200,000 top players. The list includes:

Halo infinite

PUBG: battlefield

Apex legends

Cyberpunk 2077

Grand Theft Auto V.

New world

Counter Strike Global Offensive

Another category that many are sure to be curious about is the “top sellers” of 2021. According to the list, this category offers a look at the “100 games that will generate the most revenue on Steam in 2021”. To maintain the list, Valve looked at game sales, in-game transactions, and DLC sales for all gaming apps on Steam for the year. The platinum level of the list includes:

Rainbow Six: Siege

Grand Theft Auto V.

Counter Strike Global Offensive

New world

Fate 2

Naraka: Blade tip

Apex legends

PUBG battlefields

Dead by daylight

Battlefield 2042

Each of these lists show that 2021 was an eclectic gaming year for Steam gamers, with a mix of different genres and titles dominating the charts. The full list and many other categories can be found in the official version of Valve blog entry for all the details.
