Philipp Weber, during a streaming event celebrating CD Projekt RED’s 20th birthday, revealed why there are so many question marks on Skellige in The Witcher 3. As he says, it’s his doing.

Yesterday, another live broadcast was held to celebrate CD Projekt RED’s 20th birthday. This time the devs discussed The Witcher 3through which we learned, among other things, why there are so many question marks on Skellige.

A rookie developer’s mistake

As Philipp Weber (campaign director) admitted, he is responsible for the plethora of undiscovered places on Skellige. In 2014, when the deadline for the release of The Witcher 3 was approaching, CDPR needed something to fill the game’s map with.

The ideal tool was the contraband hidden around Skellige, which was originally not to be marked on the map at all.

“I can freely admit that I am one of those people who actually put up those question marks. It was already at the end of 2014, so not long before the release, when we basically just flooded the world with them. We didn’t have much time, so it was largely along the lines of: ‘ok, we gotta do it, but we can’t do it perfectly’.”

The plan was different

Since contraband wasn’t going to be marked on the map, how was the player supposed to know there was something interesting in the water? Well, as the developer explains, the seagulls circling over a certain spot above the water were supposed to tell us where the cache was located.

This would definitely add variety to the exploration and make the map a bit clearer. After all, Skellige is almost buried under question marks. Nevertheless, Weber admits that he will certainly not make the same mistake a second timeso we don’t have to worry about the question marks in the next The Witcher.

The New Witcher

While on the subject of the new installation of The Witcher series, it is worth recalling that the work of the game is currently involving more than 100 people and the project itself is in the pre-production phase. Unfortunately, the release date of the new game, which is temporarily dubbed as The Witcher 4, is not known, although the game has been in development for 3-4 years at this point.

Of course, we know more about the new The Witcher. A full description of these facts can be found in the text, which you can find below.
