The Steam Awards and Top Sellers for 2021 include Cyberpunk 2077 and the Usual Suspects

While ribbons and bones were still knitting together in our Christmas vats, Valve released some Steam stuff towards the end of the year. This includes lists of the best-selling and most-played games from 2021, and the results of the users voted Steam awards.

The Steam Awards are always a bit strange as they are user-voted and often favor games with large online player bases. Perhaps the clearest example of this is when it won Forza Horizon 5 “Outstanding Visual Style” this year. It is certainly a very pretty game, but is the style of the game outstanding? Runner-ups included Subnautica Below Zero, Little Nightmares 2, Bright Memory: Infinite, and Psychonauts 2, which frankly should have probably won.

Resident Evil Village was named Game of the Year, but perhaps most interestingly, Cyberpunk won “Outstanding Story Rich Game” in 2077. Are people mad about it? Honestly, it deserves it. I really liked Cyberpunk 2077 when I was reviewing it, but it has grown in my assessment over the past year as I thought about it. I finally decided to repeat it over the Christmas holidays and its story shines – even if the RPG systems, shooting, and bugs continue to disappoint slightly.

On the Top seller list, Cyberpunk 2077 could only land in the “Silver” category. The top sellers were mostly long-term service games – Siege, CSGO, GTA5, Dota 2 etc. – but there were also some newcomers such as Naraka Bladepoint and Valheim. At the top of the page you will find filters that allow you to only look at the new releases of 2021 which make a more interesting list, albeit still with long running series. Congratulations to Wildermyth who is in the platinum tier for gaming who completed Early Access last year.
