The Game Awards 2021: nominees, start times, and where to watch

Geoff Keighley’s annual Game Awards show is back with many awards and many (in your best voice) world premieres. Whether you want to see your favorite games win prizes or you’re just here for the big revelations, you want to know how to watch The Game Awards and when it all starts. Fortunately, we have all the details here.

Death loop currently leads the field, but Psychonauts 2 and PlayStation exclusive Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart also collected many nominations. But who will win the referendum? Read on below to find out when the Game Awards start, the full list of nominees, and what else to expect during the show.

When are the Game Awards 2021?

The Game Awards 2021 show will take place on Thursday December 9th (or Friday 10th, depending on where you live). Below is the exact time and date in your time zone:

  • West Coast USA: Thursday, December 9th at 5 p.m. PST
  • East coast USA: Thursday, December 9th, 8 p.m. EST
  • UNITED KINGDOM: Friday, December 10th, 1am GMT

How to watch The Game Awards 2021

The event will be broadcast transversely various video platformsincluding Youtube and Pull out. These streams are set to start half an hour earlier than the times above, although it is not yet clear whether there will be a pre-show segment with additional news or world premieres. Judging from previous Game Awards and Geoff Keighley’s various Summer Games Fest shows, it is possible that some small revelations will take place in these pre-shows, but the big announcements will likely be reserved for the main show. The main Game Awards show will last 3 hours and take us UK folks into the wee hours of the morning.

Will there be big reveals at the Game Awards 2021?

You might be wrong if you think the Game Awards are just accolades. There are also plenty of announcements about upcoming games, with the Perfect Dark relaunch, The Wolf Among Us 2, and the Xbox Series X showing off in previous years.

There are plenty of clues pointing to some of the announcements we should expect this year. this Twitter exchange between Keighley and the official Sonic account shows we could see more about the upcoming Sonic game while this tweet from Xbox Game Pass also teases that we can expect many Game Pass PC Day One launches to be announced at the Game Awards.

I will keep my expectations of all of this relatively low so that I will be pleasantly surprised by major revelations. My only big prediction at any big event over the past few years has been something related to Fable, but Microsoft responded to that request with its teaser at E3 2020. So, fable gameplay trailer please? Now that I am part of the RPS tree house, you can witness all of my regular attempts to conjure up some kind of fable announcement and the immense disappointment when I inevitably have to wait another year.

Will the Game Awards 2021 have celebrity guests?

It wouldn’t be a Keighlevent if he didn’t share the revelations with every celebrity he knows. There’s a star-studded line-up this year to announce the winners of various categories, including Giancarlo Esposito and Ming-Na Wen from The Mandalorian, Laura Bailey and Ashley Johnson from Critical Role, and Simu Liu himself Shang-Chi (each Opportunity, Mention Marvel is a must see folks). You can also expect live music performances from Sting, Imagine Dragons, and The Game Awards Orchestra. I’m just disappointed that he didn’t bring the muppets, if I’m honest.

Who are the nominations for the 2021 Game Awards?

As mentioned above, Deathloop has the most nominations for The Game Awards in 2021, but there are plenty of other titles to consider in each category. Psychonauts 2 and It Takes Two each received 5 nominations, while Resident Evil Village received 4 awards. I recently raved about Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy for the RPS Advent Calendar and it seems the Game Awards jury was just as impressed as they bagged 4 nominations as well.
