The best PlayStation 5 games for kids

When buying video games for kids, regardless of age, it can be difficult to decide what is appropriate. You need to consider not only which topics are appropriate (e.g. is it okay if the game contains violence?), But also what style of play the child can handle (e.g.).

Today we’re introducing a number of kids’ games available on PlayStation. We’ve divided them into age groups for the sake of simplicity – but don’t be afraid to deviate a little from our categories if it feels appropriate for the child in question. Most came out for the PlayStation 4, but are still available for the PlayStation 5. In case you’d like to try the game on another console, we’ve also listed the other platforms it can be found on! Finally, for your safety, we’ve added the official ESRB rating for the game.

In the Untitled Goose Game (yes that’s his real name) the player controls a local goose that waddles through the city, harassing residents in any way possible. It’s perfect for younger kids because while there are puzzles to solve and active gameplay, you’re more than welcome to just have a good time.

What are you doing as a local goose? Well, honk loudly to begin. You can steal people’s hats too. Or take a stroll through the local gardens. Or steal people’s things when they’re not looking (or when they are). You can always find something to do!

Donut County

Donut County’s core idea – dropping items into a growing hole in the ground – is one that is constantly being abused in ad-heavy phone games. Here it is fully elaborated and backed up with a whimsical story.

You play as a raccoon, one who actually controls the holes from his own phone to earn silly prizes. However, when his friends in town ask him why he dumped all their homes underground, he has to admit his crimes and make things right.


Bug Fables: The Eternal Sapling

Bug Fables is an adorable video game that Jamie Latour compared to Paper Mario in his review for TheGamer. Inside, You play as three beetles – a beetle named Kabbu, a bee named Vi, and a moth named Leif – who are looking for a sapling that will give eternal life.

Cooking mom: Cookstar

Cooking Mama is a popular franchise, and this entry won’t disappoint. For those who don’t know Cooking Mama allows the player to prepare meals by going through each step in great detail and rate how well they are doing. At the end of the cooking process, the dish the player prepared can turn out to be really good or really bad, depending on how good the player was in the cooking phase.

There are two big changes this game adds to the regular formula: the PETA-approved vegetarian dishes and the ability to photograph your creations.

Video games for children ages 8-9+

Astroneer

Astroneer is a sandbox game, which means that the player should do what they want with the resources that the game developers have made available to them. It also includes aspects of survival games, but it’s a great way to introduce beginners to this tough genre as it doesn’t take that aspect very seriously.

As the name suggests In this game, players control an astronaut and travel across a series of fantastic planets when collecting resources, building space bases or building lunar vehicles.


Sackboy: A great adventure

Sackboy and the Little Big Planet games have been a popular PlayStation exclusivity for a while. In this title, Sackboy returns to save the so-called “Craftworld” and to become the legendary “Knitted Knight”. It was so well received that it won BAFTA for Best Family Game!

Since Sackboy: A Big Adventure is primarily a platformer, we recommend it to older children. However, if you are buying the game for younger children who are particularly patient or skillful at playing, they would likely enjoy this game too!

Video games for children ages 10-12+

Child of light

Child of Light is a lesser-known game from Ubisoft that was first released in 2014. It’s perfect for the kid in your life because It is actually supposed to imitate a fairy tale! In it, a young girl named Aurora must save the sun, moon and stars, all of which are held captive by the Queen of the Night.


The developers spent a lot of time designing the art style to look like a watercolor, and that – along with the game’s soundtrack and story – received critical acclaim.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

The Ratchet & Clank series has a long history dating back to 2002 and still going strong with the 2021 title: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Though there are things in the game that have entertained long-time fans of the series – like parallel universe versions of planets they have visited before! – A child will have no problem delving directly into this entry even without playing the other games.


Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is part platformer, part shooter. The player controls Ratchet – a cat-like alien creature – who travels through space on a self-built ship. Ratchet must defeat an evil emperor from another dimension and save the universe!

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

In this beautiful game the player controls the title character, Kena who is a spirit guide. It helps the spirits of people who have died to get from the physical world to the spiritual world. The player has to face Kena’s greatest challenge so far: a ghost that refuses to move into the next world and lets the forest rot and die.


Kena: Bridge Of Spirits is a PlayStation exclusive (although it can also be played on a Windows PC). Although it was released for the PlayStation 5 in 2021, it is also available for the PlayStation 4. It involves a wide range of tools and skills, and players will have to grapple with fairly challenging combat and puzzle encounters. Hence, we recommend it for older children.
