The beginning of the year is often a time when players will recharge their batteries before returning to their daily routines. It’s no different this time around, and the number of active users on Steam is testament to that.
The popular gaming platform posted another active user record on January 2, when 27,942,036 players were online at the same time. according to SteamDB.
The above number comes just two months after users broke the previous record of nearly 27.4 million active users in November 2021.
It’s also a leap in terms of the active players at the time. In November, when the previous record was set, 7.8 million players were actively playing. This time there were over 8.2 million players in the game. For those stats, however, the January numbers only surpassed the previous record of 8.1 million active players set in April 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic spiked and locked the world in their homes.
In addition, it should come as no surprise that many of the 8.2 million players playing at the time of the record saw their time playing the platform’s oldest and most popular games. CS: GO, Team Fortress 2, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Dota 2 were at the top among the games – titles that consistently make the list of the most popular games on Steam.
Just two of the games released in 2021 –Football manager 2022 and New world– found themselves in the top 10 games played when the record was broken on January 2nd.
