So, just how big is Splatoon for Nintendo? > NOW

On Wednesday last week (10 August), Nintendo unveiled a thirty-minute-long Direct presentation focused exclusively on Splatoon 3. Considering that some big directs come in around the 40-minute mark and feature a full selection of games, it’s clear that Nintendo is putting a lot of love (and marketing) behind the new game. Now, for some of us, this may seem a little odd. Why does Nintendo care so much about a weird neon-coloured family-friendly shooter filled with strange squid-children hybrids?

…it’s now one of their tentpole franchises – probably up there with the likes of Mario and Zelda!

Well, other than it being a whole lot of fun to play… Splatoon finally provided Nintendowith an entry into the very popular first-person (or in this case third-person) shooter market. On top of that it’s the quirky art style and bright, bold attitude may not be that interesting in all markets – but in Japan, it quickly became a mega-hit; The original was the highest-selling game on the Wii U there, and Splatoon 2 has sold of 13 million copies worldwide. And interestingly enough it has a small but very engaged community of players here in SA!

So, just how big is Splatoon for Nintendo? Well, in short, it’s now one of their tentpole franchises – up there with the likes of Mario and Zelda. And if you’re a Switch owner and still not sure what all the fuss is about check out our breakdown of the highlights from Thursdays Direct over at The Nintendo Gamerand be on the lookout for Splatoon 3 launching on the 9th of September!
