As announced, PUBG: battlefields has just become play for free. Formally it happened yesterday, but maintenance work has been going on since January 10th and players have only been able to download a new update or the entire game since this morning. To mark the occasion, the creators have released a new, rather unusual trailer that you can check out below.
Dave Curd, Creative Director at PUBG Studios, gave the reasons for switching to the free-to-play business model. He said that in an interview with GamesRadar It’s not because of the success of free-to-play competitors like Apex legends or Fourteen days. The company simply felt that the “right time” to make such a decision was to encourage players to check out PUBG. Especially those who haven’t given this game a chance “for various reasons”. Curd also pointed out that every popular battle royale – yes PUBG as well as its competitors – has its own “unique” strengths:
We decided PUBG: battlefields a free-to-play game because we think the time is really right [for such a decision]. I know there are a lot of people who have been interested in this PUBG: battlefields but have never played it for various reasons. Now is the perfect time to start.
This is in no way an answer to the other titles you mentioned [GamesRadar’s Josh West asked about Apex Legends, Fortnite i Call of Duty: Warzone – author’s note]. These are all great posts that, like us, specialize in their own strengths. We develop our game independently of the others and are excited to see what’s in store for us.

Apart from these assurances, the decision by PUBG Studios has already borne fruit. On Steam PUBG has been one of the most popular productions for years, but in the last few months, even at its peak, “only” a little more than 450,000 people played at the same time (via Steam charts). In the meantime, today PUBG has managed to attract nearly 669,000 users on Steam, beating one of the undisputed leaders of the platform – Dota 2. The game only ranks third in the for a short time Precedencewhich leaves most of the competition far behind.
This is good news for PUBG Studios, especially if it manages to keep interest in the game longer. It is also interesting that the developer plans to use the universe from. to expand PUBG: battlefields with more works, not just video games.
