Palworld’s second trailer inflicts even more terror on its Pokémon-like monsters

“Palworld looks like Pokemon until you see the guns and sweatshop,” Alice O wrote last year. Palworld has now returned with a second trailer that continues in the same vein. The buddies are seen again making machine guns in a sweatshop – but also building space rockets, being strapped to beds in nightmare hospitals and strapped into the backs of moving trucks.

Let’s be honest, it’s kind of weird that indeed Pokémon compete against each other in virtual cockfights. It’s also not like other games, like the Monster Hunter series, don’t already feature you in battles with cute, gun-wielding kitties.

Palworld seems odd mostly because no attempt is made to make it aesthetically cohesive. The buddies look like cute cartoon animal friends with huge eyes, and the player runs around with Counter-Strike-style submachine guns, throwing grenades and so on. If those were fantasy laser cannons, I wouldn’t think twice. As it is, I like the look of monster collecting and farming, and I’m surprisingly disturbed when I see the cute Pokémon suffer.

the steam News post on the trailer reveals a handful of other details, such as the game’s recent move to Unreal Engine 4. “We not only challenged graphical aspects, but also in-game systems. We aim to create a brand new game by combining different game systems like open world, monster collection, crafting, crime and more.” Crime!

Palworld is aiming for a 2022 release, with alpha testing apparently planned “in the future”. It is developed by Pocketpair, who previously published the similar crafting game Craftopia. I also really liked their maximalist tower defense CCG Overdungeon.
