Formula 1 fans in South Africa are rejoicing as the rumor mill points to a possible 5-year sponsorship deal by a global company, securing a return to Kyalami for the 2023 season of the FIA F1 World Championship.
It has been way too many years since the African continent last hosted a roaring Formula 1 car, and I can already picture being trackside, tucking into a boerie as I cheer on Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc! It won’t matter who wins on track because I feel South Africans have already won.
Boy, I’m super stoked for the country and proud of all the behind-the-scenes work to secure this.
How does this tie into gaming? Well, I’m glad you asked. As a direct result of Microsoft Game Pass, I ended up giving ACC (Assetto Corsa Competizione) a free trial and then a purchase toward the end of last year, and a DLC this morning. And whilst my excitement towards F1’s imminent return to Kyalami, I thought I’d jump on my simulator, and take you on a lap around the iconic Kyalami circuit. The track was originally built in 1961, but there have been significant changes to the layout since new owners, Porsche SA, purchased the track for around 20 million dollars on auction.
What will be changed to get the track from its current FIA grade 2 racetrack rating, to grade 1 for F1 racing to actually happen? Will the sausage kerbs go, or will they remain? Interesting times indeed…
