Apex Legends is one of the biggest shooters of the moment, with millions of concurrent players who keep coming back to the game despite its shortcomings. One of the most praised features of the Battle Royale is its movement system – World traversal feels smooth and fluid on a level that few other games can match.
Far fewer know, or at least remember, that Apex’s amazing movement system has its roots in the Titanfall series – remarkable shooters that actually have even more movement potential than Apex. Unfortunately, 2016’s Titanfall 2 fell by the wayside when Respawn Entertainment switched to Apex, and to make matters worse, the game then fell victim to constant DDOS-ing, which turned into an entire saga that also included Apex being hacked.
All of this made the game pretty much unplayable, much to the dismay of Titanfall’s small but passionate community. Despite the game being widely regarded as one of the greatest shooters of all time, it was considered pretty dead by all but a handful of die-hard fans. However, in December 2021, the same community salvaged the game entirely and developed a custom client that not only enabled private, DDOS-safe servers, but gave players a far greater level of control over the game’s settings, making custom game modes possible in the first place Just. Now that you’re up to speed on the Titanfall storyline, if you’re a returning player or looking to get into it for the first time, here’s how to install and set up the Northstar client.
What is the Titanfall 2 Northstar Client?
Named after the Titan class in the game, The Northstar Client is a community developed client for Titanfall 2 and is primarily the hard work of BobtheBob. It offers far more functionality than vanilla Titanfall 2 and doesn’t rely on Respawn support to stay online. The client has a server browser that allows users to find and join games in any mode on player-run servers.
It’s not an entirely separate game; Consider it a mod for Titanfall 2. You use it to launch the same game, just with some additional features. Given the vanilla Titanfall 2 state mentioned above, it’s a must for anyone who wants to play.
There’s a very active community surrounding Northstar, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding people to play with if you need teammates. If you want to mix things up, the modding scene is similarly active, with numerous fun and interesting mods already becoming popular.
Northstar can only be accessed by PC players, so if you’re on console, unfortunately you’re out of luck. You must also own Titanfall 2 to use Northstar, since downloading the client is useless without the game itself. If Titanfall 1 was more your thing, fear not! Something similar for the original game is in the works.
What game modes are there in Titanfall 2 Northstar Client?
In addition to all vanilla Titanfall 2 modes, players have created numerous custom modes. Some fast-rising favorites include Gun Game (which works exactly as you’d expect), Infection (not dissimilar to Apex Legends’ Halloween mode), and Fastball (a 3v3 where death is permanent each turn and the combat starts with you having BT throws you into battle).
With the server browser, you can easily find seats in lobbies for any game mode you’re in the mood for, so you can jump into games at your leisure instead of waiting for unreliable matchmaking to do the work for you.
If all of that isn’t enough for you, Private Match Creator offers a variety of settings and toggles that you can change, allowing you to create unique scenarios or your own game modes. Everything from killing the ground to disabling bleed can be customized, so there are endless possibilities to play around with.
How to Install Titanfall 2 Northstar Client
If you want to install Northstar yourself, the first thing you should do is go to his GitHub page, where you should download the .zip file shown. Once you downloaded it, Locate the file on your computer, right click on it and select “Extract All”. to move the files from the .zip file to a folder with the same name.
What you need to do next will depend on your launcher of choice, as different launchers may store game files in different locations:
How to install the Northstar client on Steam
From the Titanfall 2 menu in your Steam Library, click the settings gear icon and hover over “Manage” to open another menu. Select “Browse Local Files” from this menu. This will open a new File Explorer window where Titanfall 2’s game files are kept. The folder itself is named “Titanfall2” by default.
If for some reason it’s not possible to find the folder like this, you can use the following path, assuming you’ve never moved things from their default locations. Go to “Programs (x86)” and then to “Steam”. Scroll down to “steamapps”, open that and go to “Common” where you should see folders for all your games including Titanfall 2.
Return to your Northstar Client Folder window and copy everything from the Northstar folder (not the folder itself) to the Titanfall 2 folder. This gives you everything you need to run Northstar.
How to install the Northstar client on Origin
Origin doesn’t have an easy way to access game files like Steam does, so you’ll have to navigate to the Titanfall 2 folder yourself. Unless you have moved any files yourself, the default path for Origin should be as follows. Open a new File Explorer window, select “Local Disk” and then “Programs (x86)”. You should see a folder called “Origin Games”. Open that and Titanfall’s folder should be right there.
At this point it’s the same as Steam – Copy the contents of the Northstar folder into your existing Titanfall folder.
How to start the Northstar Client
The Northstar client runs as a separate application from Titanfall 2, so simply launching Titanfall 2 from your launcher of choice is not as straightforward. While still in the Titanfall folder with the Northstar files copied into it, locate and run NorthstarLauncher.exe, which should cause Northstar to open for the first time. You’ll be greeted with an authentication popup, and after that you’re good to go!
To make it easier to launch Northstar in the future, you can pin Northstar to your system tray while it’s running, or add it to Steam or Origin using the “Add non-Steam/Origin game” option in their respective launchers. All you have to do is find the file like before and you can launch it from your launcher like any other game.
How to play the Northstar client
Once Northstar boots up, you’ll see a slightly different version of Titanfall 2’s main menu. To access Northstar servers and features, click Launch Northstar just below the Multiplayer heading. The Northstar menu takes you to the multiplayer screen where you can use the server browser and private game options to access all of the game modes described above.
Titanfall 2 is an incredible game, so enjoy its renaissance!
