Here’s how to reduce latency in VALORANT, according to Riot

VALORANT Tech lead Marcus Reid did it all the dirty work to combat high latency.

The developer has a deep dive into VALORANTs System latency to find everything you need to know about improving performance.

Latency, the time it takes to move data from one point on a network to another, is critical to tactical shooters. In VALORANT, Reid explains, this is the time between clicking the left mouse button and firing your weapon on your monitor.

In tactical shooters, every millisecond counts. The lower your latency, the faster your actions will be processed, which could potentially give you an advantage over your opponents.

Reid ran a series of tests and measurements to find the following findings:

  • Use full screen instead of full screen window
  • Check your refresh rate setting in Windows
  • Don’t use vsync
  • If available, set Reflex to On + Boost
  • Consider your hardware equipment when choosing graphics quality settings

If you can tolerate the slower Alt + Tab, try using the exclusive full-screen mode instead of the full-screen mode in the window, advises Reid. This will work on any computer and should have a significant impact on reducing your latency.

If you have a monitor with a high refresh rate, for example 240 Hz, make sure your Windows settings are correct. According to Reid, higher frame rates reduce the latency considerably, even with the same frame rate.

Never use VSync. Vertical sync is designed to help create stability by keeping the frame rate of your game in sync with your refresh rate. But it also consistently increases latency.

Set NVIDIA Reflect to On + Boost if you have hardware that supports it. Reflect On reduces the latency in “GPU-bound scenarios”. Reflect on + Boost does the same thing, but according to Reid it also improves CPU cases that are tied to the render submission thread. You may need to update your graphics driver if you are using NVIDIA Reflect.

Finally, consider your hardware when choosing your graphics quality settings in VALORANT. Turn off everything that you don’t like optically. This advice is more for gamers with older GPUs.
