While 2021 wasn’t the best year for gaming, there were some titles that made waves on social media – and not necessarily those that came out in the last 12 months. Twitter has the hottest title in its official blog, revealed that 2021 was another record year for gaming chatter.
According to statistics, there were over 2.4 billion messages related to gaming, an increase of 14 percent compared to 2020. It’s also worth noting that the fourth quarter was the biggest quarter for gaming conversations ever on the platform, possibly thanks to metaverses and NFTs in the industry to be boiling-up topics.
Genshin Impact led the global gaming conversations last year, beating titans like Apex Legends, Final Fantasy, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Minecraft, and Fortnite – all of which made it into the top ten. These aren’t all that surprising results, however, especially since Genshin Impact was the most watched subreddit in 2021, topping both League of Legends and GTA Online. Founded in 2020, Genshin Impact also made more than $ 1 billion in consumer spending in addition to PUBG Mobile, Roblox, and Pokemon Go in 2021. That’s doubly impressive considering how new it is.
E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) was unsurprisingly the most talked about gaming event, followed by The Game Awards in December and the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase. As far as we know, the E3 2022 in-person event has been canceled and ESA has not yet officially confirmed whether an online session will take place at this time, so 2021 could possibly be the final triumph of it all.
For countries that tweet about games, Japan leads first, followed by the US in second, followed by South Korea, Thailand, Brazil, the Philippines, Indonesia, the UK, France, and then India.
Finally, there are the esports stats shared on the Twitter blog, which lists Mongraal and Bugha as the top athletes and LOUD Esports and the FaZe clan as the most popular teams. Interested parties can view all lists and infographics exactly here.
