The 1.18 Caves and Cliffs update for Minecraft drastically changed the ore distribution. You can now venture lower and higher than ever before, which means that the ore around you has been rearranged. If have been playing Minecraft for a while, this can be a bit confusing, but this guide is here to help.
In this guide, you are going to learn about the Caves and Cliffs ore distribution. This will only cover ore that is found in the Overworld; distribution within the Nether was not affected by this update, so you can still find quartz, netherite, and gold in the same locations. First, let’s take a look at the levels where you can find diamonds.
Where To Find Diamonds In 1.18
With a lower bedrock level, Diamonds can be found deeper than ever. You will be able to find diamonds between Y: 16 and Y: -64.
The best level to search for diamonds is around Y: -59. This is very deep, so be sure to bring plenty of torches and food, as well as weapons to fight off any mobs that come your way.
Where To Find Copper In 1.18
Copper is a new ore that can be smelted and turned into a wide variety of different blocks. You can find copper between Y: -16 and Y: 112.
To efficiently search for copper, search around Y: 48. Here, you will find large blobs of copper. Additionally, you will have an increased chance to find copper if you search in Dripstone Caves.
Where To Find Iron In 1.18
Iron has a very wide range of levels that it can appear in. You can find iron from Y: -64 to Y: 320; with the exception of levels Y: 73 to Y: 79. This is almost every layer of the world, meaning that you can find it pretty much everywhere.
There are two levels that yield the most amount of iron ore, which can be found below.
While searching for iron in the deepslate layer, you may be able to find larger blobs or iron ore.
Where To Find Gold In 1.18
Gold is unique in that the distribution depends on the biome that you are in. First, let’s look at gold in the badlands.
The badlands is a biome filled with red and orange sand. Here, you can find gold between Y: -64 to Y: 256. within this range, the best place to find gold is above Y: 32.
Gold in the badlands is pretty common, so be sure to travel here if you need a lot of this material.
If you are searching for gold in any other biome, you can find it between Y: -64 to Y: 32with the best location being Y:-16.
Gold found outside the badlands is harder to find, but as you explore caves and search for other ores, you should be able to find it. Keep in mind that you can also find gold nuggets in the Nether. Just don’t mine near Piglins!
Where To Find Coal In 1.18
Coal is a very important early-game resource that is used to smelt other ores in a furnace. You can find coal from Y: 0 to Y: 320. This is a very broad range, so to efficiently mine coal, search around the following levels.
As you can see, coal is found high above sea level, which is new for the Caves and Cliffs update. Prior to this, coal could be found anywhere below sea level. Coal can also be found exposed, as shown in the image above. Knowing this, you can search for coal without entering a cavern.
Where To Find Emeralds In 1.18
Emeralds are primarily obtained through trading with villagers and Wandering Traders, but they do generate naturally in the world.
This ore will only generate in the mountains and windswept hills biomes. In these biomes, emerald ore will appear between Y: -16 to Y: 320. the best level to search for emeralds is Y: 236which is high in the mountains.

Where To Find Lapis Lazuli In 1.18
To enchant your tools and armor, you will need lapis lazuli. This blue ore can be found between Y: -64 to Y: 64. The best place to find lapis is at Y: -1.
Lapis lazuli is relatively rare, but you will not need too much while enchanting. At most, you will need just three pieces of lapis to enchant an item.
Where To Find Redstone In 1.18
Lastly, we have redstone. Similar to diamonds, redstone can be found from Y: -64 to Y: 16, with the ideal level being Y: 59. Because of this, you can efficiently search for redstone and diamonds at the same time.
