Astralis enters 2022 as an underdog and aims to return to greatness

Astralis is a new team. The former line-up, the biggest ever, was split up when Nicolai “dev1ce” Reedtz decided to go to ninjas in pajamas. They were split again when Emil “Magisk” Reif, Peter “dupreeh” Rasmussen and coach Danny “zonic” Sørensen were removed from the active squad. These members were replaced by Benjamin “blameF” Bremer, Kristian “k0nfig” Wienecke and trainer Alexander “ave” Holdt.

“I will never have great respect for those who leave us,” said Lukas “gla1ve” Rossander, in-game leader of Astralis. “Without them we would never have done what we did, and they are still good friends. But for Astralis, I really believe that this is what we needed. “

Astralis has played three events since adding “blowf” and “k0nfig” to their list. They took third place at the BLAST Premier: Fall Finals, 9-12. Place at the Intel Extreme Masters Winter and the 5th-6th Place at the BLAST Premier: World Final. These aren’t exactly the results that Counter-Strike: Global Offensive fans expect from the most successful organization of all time. But with a new roster, it’s a new era for the team. Even so, gla1ve believes that the “sky is the limit” for this current version of Astralis.

“There’s so much quality in this team that we can all achieve our goals if we take the time to do things right and don’t stress ourselves under the pressure of experts and fans to know better,” said gla1ve.

The past year was a time of upheaval for the organization. Although accusedF and k0nfig are both Danish and a strong culture fits the team (on more than one occasion, accusedF has talked about how well the team gelled behind the scenes), there are still problems on the server that need to be ironed out.

Young Gun Philip “Lucky” Ewald has turned away from the AWP and taken on a rifle role, with gla1ve taking the “big green” in his place. Astralis’ card pool is changing to include Mirage, which has been the team’s permanent ban for the past few years. And in general, it takes the team some time to get used to their new roles.

“It will probably take another three to four months to finish everything,” said k0nfig. “We still play to win every game. We insist on doing things right so that we may not win everything yet. “

Winning it all may sound unrealistic, but that’s what fans want the Danish organization to do. They have redefined what it means to create an “Era” by winning four majors; three of them in a row. They have a huge following that brings massive expectations with them.

“I will never complain that we get too much attention or that the fans ask too much,” said gla1ve.

But gla1ve and Andreas “Xyp9x” Højsleth have already established themselves as Counter-Strike sizes. If this version of Astralis doesn’t raise trophies, fan anger is likely to be directed towards the newcomers to the accused, k0nfig and Lucky. At CS: GO, both accused and k0nfig have both played their fair share, but when you’re constantly being compared to guys like gla1ve, the greatest in-game leader of all time, it can get tough.

“A lot of people have said a lot about gla1ve,” said k0nfig. “I can only confirm that he is a hell of a good leader and captain of the game. Along with [Xyp9x], They are the cultural bearers of the team and share eight major titles between the two, of course you have a lot of respect. They are champions, but even champions can learn. And now we’re teammates; we are standing on level ground. “

Astralis heads into 2022 as a team that has something to prove and it’s not a situation they’ve been in a lot over the past few years.

“Astralis is not the same when you look at the line-up and the style of play,” said Xyp9x. “But on the other hand, we are Astralis and nothing has changed about that.”

The team’s way back to its former glory begins in February with IEM Katowice.
