Arcane editors Ernesto Matamoros-Cox and Lawrence Gan discuss the creation of the League animation series

The first season of Arcane Lots of fans wanted more – and we’re sure to get more when season two releases. But for now, all you have to do is watch the first nine episodes in repetition and find out every secret behind how the first animated series was inspired by the world of League of Legends.

Two of the series’ editors, Ernesto Matamoros-Cox and Lawrence Gan, spoke to Dot Esports about the making of Arcane.

Both editors were approached by Riot in 2017 to work on Arcane. And even if they didn’t know much about the universe of at first league, it quickly became clear that Arcane “It was going to be special,” said Matamoros-Cox. “[It was] something completely different and possibly the future of animation. And we didn’t know then how right we were. “

Arcane is the first animated series inspired by the league Universe and it was “a lot of pressure” to work on it, according to Matamoros-Cox, mainly because of the high expectations of the community. But Riot made a great experience for fans who have been playing the game since 2009 and for those who approached it for the first time league Universe with Arcane. And this, according to both editors, is also due to the fact that Riot “kept the project completely in-house” by working with Fortiche and working with the animation studio on the series, rather than “[sending] from her property to some Hollywood studio somewhere. ”

“I think that just shows the dedication and the level of dedication,” said Gan. “Because it took a lot of time and effort on behalf of the company to ensure that this high quality of the detailed storytelling remains constant even when opening into an animated series world.”

The quality of Arcane is at a high level in all aspects of the show, from the animation and soundtrack to the writing and editing of each episode. The creators of Arcane managed to build a show full of contrasts and similarities, metaphorical and explicit comparisons between parallel dichotomies in the same environment.

“The dichotomy between Piltover and Zaun, [the writers] build these two worlds which are symbolic in many ways, ”said Gan. “I mean, twin cities, symbolic of a lot of the relationships, not just Vi and Jinx, but Vander and Silco as well. I think there are many topics that play out similarly, but with different results. “

This attention to detail is most evident in “mirror moments,” scenes that are similar and have a similar, if not identical, meaning. Those moments are what both editors have cited as the only thing to really watch out for during the series, especially those in episode three of act one. More specifically, “Episode three is when you start to see someone else play double, like double words,” Gan said. Matamoros-Cox added, “There are moments when you don’t really know where the story is going.”

And despite the years of work and countless changes and adjustments to the series, there are moments or scenes that “had to maintain their integrity” because they were fundamental to the story and the feelings that it had to convey to all viewers. Matamoros-Coz said the story was “grounded and rooted in things of real life”. The audience can connect with him and the characters because “[Riot] let these moments be, ”says Matamoros-Cox.

An example of this can be found in the last scene of the first act. “The way in which [the finale of episode three] was cut where the explosion gives a moment to see everyone’s point of view during the explosion, ”said Gan. “And I know that that was also very important for our partners or, you know, our colleagues at Fortiche. We made sure that we maintain the integrity of these moments, no matter what we do, no matter how the cut changes. ”

Arcane has opened the doors of a vast universe to an even wider audience than before. It is the connecting bridge between those who like an exciting and grandiose story and those who have come to know and love the characters of a game that is now over a decade old. The passion, commitment and attention to detail of those who have been worked on Arcane can be heard in every note, seen in every picture and every time we hear “I just wanted to help” it can be felt in the cold on our skin.

“I remember reading this, I remember reading the script for the show a long time ago when we started and just thought, what kind of show is this? That’s amazing, ”said Gan.

“I mean, really, I don’t think people have any idea how this is going to play out,” said Matamoros-Cox. “And it’s like that… I don’t even know, I don’t know. It’s easy, it’s so beautiful. “
