A new record for concurrent users has been set by Steam

The holiday season is another year in the rearview mirror and many of us have a pile of new games to play with or gift cards to buy new games. Some of you may even have been lucky enough to find a new console, PC, or mobile device to play on. Where most of the vacation pay was spent, the numbers seem to suggest it was Steam.

Steam is always quite busy this time of year due to the above points. However, this year the platform was literally busier than ever. Steam’s all-time simultaneous player record was broken last week when it was painfully close to breaking the 28 million mark for the first time. Fast forward seven days and that record was broken again, breaking the 28 million mark.

As you can see, go to SteamDB, Steam’s all-time concurrent player record is now 28,230,853. The new record was set sometime on Sunday. In fact, there are currently more than 21 million people playing various games on Steam, which is almost as impressive as the new record considering it is a Monday morning in most of the world.

Steam tends to hit big numbers in January as everyone returns to their PCs after the holidays, and this year is no different. In fact, as highlighted in the tweet above, the peak concurrent player count increases every year in January. There was a huge spike between January 2020 and 2021 as so many people turned to gaming over that 12 month period. That it jumped again and set new records twice within two weeks only shows that many of these new players are there.

The games that contributed most of the players to this 28.2 million probably won’t surprise you too much. Almost a million of them played CS: GO, closely followed by Dota 2. PUBG, Apex Legends and GTA 5 were also among the top performers. While it is now a popular time to gamble as it comes right after the holidays, it can’t be long before the record is broken again. This is the fourth time it has been broken in the past 12 months alone.
